OEM information on Windows XP

OEM information is stored in two files:
  • OEMLOGO.bmp (%windir%\system32\OEMLOGO.bmp)
  • oem.ini or oeminfo.ini (%windir%\system32\oem.ini or %windir%\system32\oeminfo.ini)
You can change OEMLOGO.bmp with your own image. And oem.ini or oeminfo.ini can be changed with whatever information.
If you have a different image format than ‘.BMP’ and you want to rename it to OEMLOGO.bmp it will not work, you have to convert the image into ‘.bmp’ format.

Sample [oeminfo.ini]

Password Protect Any Windows Program

Using Empathy one can password protect any executable file and keep it protected even if it is copied to another location or computer. The light footprint of the software (219KB) means that it can also be used to protect portable apps carried around in USB drives.

Empathy v2.1 is compatible with Windows (all versions).

Password Protect Any Windows Program

Protect Exe

Protect Exe 0.4 is a freeware program that lets you password protect any Windows executable program. It is useful for locking Win XP/Windows Vista/Win 2000/Win 2003 Server/Win 98/Win Me/Win 95/Win NT 4.0 exe files. Protect Exe 0.4 does not make any changes to the registry while locking the files, nor does it save the password in a hidden file somewhere on the system.

Protect Exe 0.4 at 124KB is a featherweight protection system.

FreeUndelete restores deleted files, including those removed from Windows Recycle Bin. In case of accidental removal of files on a NTFS (1.0 and 2.0) (default for Windows Vista, XP, 2000 and NT), FAT32, FAT16 or FAT12 file systems this is the utility to help.

Music Album Torrents

A great website surfaced not too long ago, and it has been a a gold mine for music lovers everywhere : a torrent site fully dedicated to music, with an UI to make Amazon envious. In this article we’ll discuss the past and future with its creator and administrator, a mysterious web developer from Europe, who wishes to remain anonymous due to threats from the RIAA and IFPI. We’ll also take a look at and analyze how it has changed the way you will download music.

To Download Free, Legal Concert Recordings

Today we will be looking, more specifically, at some of the sites that offer live concert recordings available for download. In order to download these files to your computer you will need a torrent client, like utorrent (Windows) or Transmission (Mac, Linux). Here they are, in no particular order:

Etree is a site dedicated to providing numerous free and open-source related material and media with torrents being one of the best sections of the site. More specifically located at, Etree hosts an incredible amount of free, legal, concert recordings available for download and distribution. With a fairly large amount of leechers and seeders, Etree continually has a growing archive of torrents and live concert recordings from artists like Grateful Dead, Phish, Widespread Panic, etc.

Etree is definitely one of the best resources for accessing the best free, legal concert recordings on the web.

A pure online torrent client and behaves exactly like a desktop one:

  • users put the torrent link in the box (or uses an existing torrent file) then click “Download Torrent”.
  • BitLet will ask where to save the shared file.
  • after users give the location, the download process will start.

But being a torrent client, it’s still possible that the traffic gets blocked by the admin. It might work on your connection, it might not.

Download Torrents without P2P Software

Maybe you’ll find it hard to believe but there are a great number of people - especially in my part of the world - who are still not familiar with the whole concept of using and downloading with torrents. This popular file-sharing method has been around for sometime but I still get a lot of questions such as: “What now? I downloaded the torrent but nothing is happening.” I assume it’s because of the fact that downloading files via torrent is not as straightforward as downloading files directly from the server or from the web.

How to Create a Windows XP Unattended Installation CD

I would like to show you how you can automate this whole process using a great little program called nLite.

Before we get started you will need a Windows XP installation CD as well as the product key. You will also need a blank CD where you will write your new installation files to.

Step 1: Download and install nLite. When you are finished run the program.

Step 2: Select your language and click “Next”.

Step 3: You will now be asked to locate your Windows installation files. Click browse and choose your Windows XP installation CD. You will also be asked where you would like to save your Windows XP installation files. Create a new folder, name it whatever you like, and click “Ok”. nLite will now begin to copy the installation files from the CD to the folder you created. When it is finished, click “Next”.

Step 4: You will now be prompted with a Presets window. This is where you can choose your previous settings if you have already created an unattended installation CD before. Click “Next”.

Step 5: Now you will see the Task Selection window. This is where you will choose the operations you would like to perform. Click “All” and then “Next.

Step 6: You will now be prompted for the location of the Windows Service Pack you would like to integrate into the installation. If your Windows XP Installation CD doesn’t include Service Pack 2 then select it. When you are finished, click “Next”.

Step 7: Here you can set your unattended installation CD to install the Windows updates during the installation process. In order to do this, you need to download all of the updates from Microsoft and save them to a folder. There is a great little program called Windows Update downloder that will help you with this. Once you download them, click “Insert” and select them all. Then click “Next”.

Step 8: Now you can select what specific drivers you want to preinstall with Windows besides the ones that are installed by default. If you don’t have any just click “Next”.

Step 9: Here you will be able to choose which Windows components not to install. When you are finished, click “Next”.

Step 10: Now you will be able to set up the unattended part of the installation. If you have a product key, enter it here so you aren’t prompted for it during the installation. You can also tweak all of the other predefined settings. When you are finished, click “Next”.

Step 11: Here you will be able to change settings such as the language, install path or set up OEM branding. When you are finished, click “Next”.

Step 12: Here you can tweak various other Windows settings that you would normally set up after the installation finishes. Click “Next” when you are finished.

Step 13: You will now receive a prompt that says “Do You Want To Start The Process”. Click “Yes” and nLite will apply the patches and changes you made to your Windows installation folder. When the process has completed it will tell you how large your installation folder is. Click “Next"

Step 14: Now you can create an ISO file for your new Windows XP unattended installation CD. You can also burn the the files directly to a CD without creating an ISO.

And there you have it, your very own Windows XP unattended installation CD

Protecting A folder in Windows XP

let us create a folder named "abc" (without quotes). Now, you need to assign something to this folder so that it could be disallowed to open... Just there is a CLSID to do that.
open notepad and write

"ren abc abc.{2559a1f2-21d7-11d4-bdaf-00c04f60b9f0}" without quotes.

Save the file with ".bat" extension. Let us save it as protect.bat (This is the extension of batch files) in the same location where the folder in so that it can be directly be called upon. I mean to say you need to create the batch file in the parent directory of abc. Double click on the file and your folder will be locked.

To unprotect it just change the line to this:

"ren abc.{2559a1f2-21d7-11d4-bdaf-00c04f60b9f0} abc"
You will have to change the folder name in place of abc. Thats all.

create a folder

Well, Try to create a folder in windows platform with the name CON, AUX, COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, PRN, NUL....

You cant able to do it...
Its just because of some system calls of this services already been there for those names. So If you try to create or delete those system calls, It will restrict you in doing them... But I have a solution to this..
Try the following steps..

STEP1: goto command prompt

STEP2: type in prompt c:\> "md \\.\c:\con"

STEP3: verify by typing "dir \\.\c:\con"

STEP4: delete the file or folder "rd \\.\c:\con"

Hacking Windows XP

Under normal circumstances, a user cannot run code as System, only the operating system itself has this ability, but by using the command line, we will trick Windows into running our desktop as System, along with all applications that are started from within.

Getting SYSTEM

I will now walk you through the process of obtaining SYSTEM privileges.
To start, lets open up a command prompt (Start > Run > cmd > [ENTER]).
At the prompt, enter the following command, then press [ENTER]:

If it responds with an “access denied” error, then we are out of luck, and you’ll have to try another method of privilege escalation; if it responds with “There are no entries in the list” (or sometimes with multiple entries already in the list) then we are good. Access to the at command varies, on some installations of Windows, even the Guest account can access it, on others it’s limited to Administrator accounts. If you can use the at command, enter the following commands, then press [ENTER]:

Code:at 15:25 /interactive “cmd.exe”

Lets break down the preceding code. The “at” told the machine to run the at command, everything after that are the operators for the command, the important thing here, is to change the time (24 hour format) to one minute after the time currently set on your computers clock, for example: If your computer’s clock says it’s 4:30pm, convert this to 24 hour format (16:30) then use 16:31 as the time in the command. If you issue the at command again with no operators, then you should see something similar to this:

When the system clock reaches the time you set, then a new command prompt will magically run. The difference is that this one is running with system privileges (because it was started by the task scheduler service, which runs under the Local System account). It should look like this:

You’ll notice that the title bar has changed from cmd.exe to svchost.exe (which is short for Service Host). Now that we have our system command prompt, you may close the old one. Run Task Manager by either pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE or typing taskmgr at the command prompt. In task manager, go to the processes tab, and kill explorer.exe; your desktop and all open folders should disappear, but the system command prompt should still be there.
At the system command prompt, enter in the following:

A desktop will come back up, but what this? It isn’t your desktop. Go to the start menu and look at the user name, it should say “SYSTEM”. Also open up task manager again, and you’ll notice that explorer.exe is now running as SYSTEM. The easiest way to get back into your own desktop, is to log out and then log back in.

Delete the Recycle Bin icon from the Desktop

Open Registry Editor.
In Registry Editor, navigate to the following registry key:

Find the following key:

Close Registry Editor.

There is no need to reboot. Just wait a few seconds and see how the icon disappears from the desktop.

Note : In order to restore the Recycle Bin icon to the desktop just re-create the missing key

OEM Info and Logo

Optional items include the manufacturer and model, a small picture, and a button leading to a separate page of support information.

The information is not held in the registry, but in an old-style .INI file, which can be created in any plain-text editor including Windows Notepad.

This file can have two sections:

  1. The first section, has a section header called [General], and within that section - two entries:
  • Manufacturer=
  • Model=
  1. The second section, headed [Support Information], is optional, but if present adds a button with that label to the page. The entries after that heading should be in the form:
  • Line1=
  • Line2=
  • Line3=

and so on. The limit on the number and length of lines seems limited only by the 64 KB general limit on .INI files.

The file should be saved in the %systemroot%\system folder (for Windows 98/ME computers) or in %systemroot%\system32 folder (for W2K/XP/2003 computers) as OEMINFO.INI.

The picture is a 256-colour-Windows bitmap (.BMP) file.

Microsoft states that the size should be 96 pixels square when using small fonts in Display Property settings, or 120 square with large fonts.

The file should be saved in the %systemroot%\system folder (for Windows 98/ME computers) or in %systemroot%\system32 folder (for W2K/XP/2003 computers) as OEMLOGO.BMP.

No other entry in the .INI file is required, but the latter must exist and have a populated [General] section for the bitmap to be visible in Display Properties.

No reboot is necessary in order for the hack to take place. Press the ÿ +BREAK keys and see for yourself.

or you can download a simple software for this ....

Linux Mint

Linux, like other operating systems, has different versions available. One of the newest Linux systems is Linux Mint. Linux Mint is a version of Linux that strives to become easy to use for the average person. Unlike other Linux releases, such as Ubuntu, Debian or Fedora, Linux Mint has no set release dates for updated versions, but instead pushes quality over timely releases. Because updates are primarily overseen by users of the system, there are several different releases of Linux Mint, featuring several different software suites.

Disable USB Disks with GPO.

In GPEdit.msc (or any other GPO Editor window you're using) click on View > Filtering.

Click to un-select the "Only show policy settings that can be fully managed" check-box. Click Ok.

Now you will be able to see the new settings in the right pane:

You can now configure any of the above settings:

An additional step that needs to be performed before the above tip will work has to do with modifying the file access permissions for 2 files. You need to remove the SYSTEM access permissions from the usbstor.sys and usbstor.inf files.

You can do so by right clicking these files > Properties, then going to the Security tab. There you need to remove the line for the SYSTEM account.

World Fastest Growing Operating System

When I am studying about Microsoft Products ( for MCSE - Microsoft Certified System Engineer ) I have a temptation to learn about LINUX because these day lot of thoughts are going about "Open Source" "LINUX". So that is why I have joined to study about LINUX ( Advanced Linux Administration ) in SLIIT [ Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology ] In the earlier days I have no idea about LINUX but now I have gained basic knowledge about LINUX environment. (I have Tested) ;

> RedHat Linux
> Fedora Core 8.0
> Knoppix 3.2 and 3.4
> Ubuntu 5.10
> Slax linux
> Debian ( Default )
> Mepis

It's easy to install and easy to use because all of the programs that we want to use are included in the same distribution. ( Many software's also included with OS ),like Open Office 2.0 It's easy to handle and the Security level is the most important thing, It's very HIGH. Some of the Distributions can be downloaded free of charge from the INTERNET. Here are some of the URL's : - ISO images of free operating systems

Now news about LINUX distributions are all over the world. See,

I don't like to compare WINDOWS Vs LINUX, but I have using Linux and Windows together Since 2005 Sept. ( Windows XP and Debian ) [ I have using Windows since year 2000 ] nowadays Linux is more user friendly that the earlier, because the Desktop environment is improving rapidly.( X - Windows System ; KDE,gnome ) Try these Web URL and gain some Knowledge about LINUX
